A Beginner’s Guide to Setting Up Speaker Wires

Connecting your speaker wiringis not the most interesting bit about setting up your soundsystem, but without them, you won’t be able to enjoy a rich audio experience when watching a movie or listening to music.

They may seem like a tricky activity to the uninitiated, but once you sit down and try to figure it out, it is quite simple.

These are the simple steps you need to follow in order to connect your speaker wires to your audio setup:

1. Identify Which Speaker Wire is Positive, and Which is Negative

There are several ways in which you can differentiate which wire is positive, and which is negative:

  • A positive wire will have a printed line, or a series of dashes on the coating.
  • One side is coated in red, which is positive, and the other is black, which is negative.
  • One wire has a copper color, which is positive, and the other has a silvercolor, which is negative.
  • The positive wire could be marked by a plus/positive symbol, while the negative is marked by a negative symbol.
  • The positive side of the wire has an imprint or molded stripe.

For these kinds of identifiers, the imprints can sometimes be easy to miss. You need to carefully study them under a good source of light, preferably outside during daytime.

2. Splice the Speaker Wire Together

There are two ways through which you can achieve this:

Using Crimp Terminals To Join the Wire Together

To crimp the wire properly, you will need to:

  • Strip it, leaving approximately 3/8” to 1/2” of it exposed.
  • Tightly twist the wire, to make it easier to push it properly into the connector.
  • Insert the wire into one end, making sure it touches the metal contact inside.
  • Place the connector into its optimal position in the crimp tool.
  • Crimp firmly with the tool, in order to fix the wire inside permanently.
  • Repeat the same procedure with the other side of the speaker wire.

Joining the Speaker Wire by Soldering

This is probably the most effective method to extend and splice speaker wire. This is because if done properly, the connection is strong, long-lasting, and the electrical path is extremely good.

To solder the wire, follow these steps:

  • Cut and strip the wire.
  • Hold up the two ends of the wire to form an X shape. Make sure the ends are facing in opposing directions.
  • Hold both ends of the speaker wire and twist each end tightly around the other, to make sure they are completely encased in each other.
  • Apply solder on the tip of the wire, making sure that it flows fully over the entire length.
  • After it has cooled, insulate it with electrical tape.

Types of Speaker Wire Connections

There are two standard types of connections:

1. Spring Clips

This is the most common for many types of equipment. It is however mostly found in budget equipment, or in all-in-one equipment.

This type of connection is popular because it is easy to use. All you are required to do is open the connector, then insert the wire into the opening that appears above the button you pressed, and you are done.

2. Binding Posts

This connection type is popular, as it can be found in both budget models and the more expensive high-end- models. To utilize this method, unscrew the plug on the connector. Then insert the stripped wire into the cavity left by the plug. Screw the plug back, and you are done.

Connecting the Wire to the Speakers

In order to connect used pa speakers with speaker wires, you will need to first place the amplifier and the speakers in their desired positions. When doing so, make sure that their connection panels are fully accessible to you.

Proceed to ensure that the wires cannot cause accidents by tripping anyone walking by or even your pet. To secure the cables, you can use duct tape to secure them, or squeeze them into contours on the wall.

Three, match the speaker wires to the correct outputs on the amplifier. This should be easy, because the connections are well indicated on the devices. Also make sure to check that you connect the poles correctly. Positive should connect with positive, while negative should connect with negative. The color scheme and markings on the wires should assist you with this.

On the receiver, open the mounts to leave a gap where the stripped end of the speaker wire will fit in.Finally, insert the end of the cable into the receiver’s connector, and close it.

If you connect two speakers in different ways, their diaphragms will then move in different directions. This will cause the low-frequency waves to cancel out each other, and the sound will be an irritant to your ears.

To Sum It Up

Connecting speaker wires to devices is a pretty straightforward activity but only if you know what you are doing. As such, knowing about the kinds of connections will come in handy. Hopefully, the information highlighted above should provide you with a good place to start.
